8 Faux Grass DIY Projects for Home and Yard (2026): From a Dog Potty Box to a Putting Green
As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.
If you have a saw, a staple gun and a weekend, faux grass can become much more than a lawn.
Faux grass DIY projects are home builds that use turf as the surface. They're bigger than a craft and smaller than a full lawn install: a potty box for a balcony dog, a putting green in the backyard, a green feature wall. Each project here lists the difficulty, the time, what you'll need and the steps. For small crafts, see faux grass crafts. For a full lawn, see our installation guide.

8 DIY projects
Each project lists what you'll need and how long it takes.
1. A dog potty box for a balcony
Difficulty: easy to moderate · Time: 2 to 3 hours
You'll need: a shallow plastic tray or a timber frame lined with pond liner, a drain spout or tubing, short pet turf, a drill.
- Measure your balcony and choose a box big enough for your dog to turn around in.
- Build or buy the tray, with a slight slope toward one corner.
- Drill a drain hole at the low corner and fit a spout or tube to a bucket or the balcony drain.
- Cut short pet turf to fit inside the tray.
- Lay the turf, and rinse daily.
For turf, FREADEM's 0.8 in pet turf is short enough to rinse clean. FREADEM on Amazon · See faux grass for balconies with pets.
2. A backyard putting green
Difficulty: moderate to hard · Time: a weekend
You'll need: putting turf, crushed rock and fine aggregate, a plate compactor, cups and flags, seam tape and glue, fine sand infill.
- Mark out the green with a hose or string.
- Dig out about 3 to 4 in and build a compacted base. See our base guide.
- Shape gentle slopes in the base for breaks, then compact again.
- Lay the putting turf and cut holes for the cups.
- Fix the edges, then brush in fine sand infill.
ALTRUISTIC's 0.47 in putting turf has the short, tight pile a green needs. ALTRUISTIC on Amazon · See faux grass for putting greens.
3. A grass feature wall on plywood
Difficulty: moderate · Time: half a day
You'll need: plywood sheets, turf or grass panels, outdoor adhesive, a staple gun and stainless staples, screws.
- Cut the plywood to size, or use full sheets.
- Glue the turf to the plywood and staple it every few inches.
- Trim the edges flush.
- Screw the board to the wall or fence, into studs or battens.
- Brush the blades to hide the staples.
See our faux grass wall guide for full methods.
4. A grass doormat with bound edges
Difficulty: easy · Time: 30 minutes
You'll need: a turf offcut, a utility knife, carpet binding tape or outdoor glue.
- Cut a rectangle about 18 × 30 in, from the back.
- Run a line of outdoor glue along the cut edges, or fold binding tape over them.
- Let it dry, then brush the blades up.
Short, stiff turf scrapes shoes best. See uses for faux grass scraps.
5. A kids' play mat with roads
Difficulty: easy · Time: 1 hour
You'll need: a short-pile turf piece, grey or black duct tape, white tape or a paint pen.
- Lay the turf flat and plan a road layout.
- Stick grey or black tape down as roads.
- Add white tape for lane lines and crossings.
- Add a small pond with blue felt, if you like.
6. A grass-topped bench or ottoman
Difficulty: moderate · Time: half a day
You'll need: a simple wooden bench or box, foam padding, turf, a staple gun, adhesive.
- Glue foam padding to the top of the bench.
- Cut turf a few inches larger than the top.
- Wrap the turf over the foam and staple it underneath.
- Trim the corners neatly.
It makes a fun garden seat or a playroom ottoman. Use UV-resistant turf outdoors.
7. Turf strips between pavers
Difficulty: moderate · Time: a day for a small patio
You'll need: turf, a utility knife, landscape pins or adhesive, sand or fine aggregate.
- Clear soil from between the pavers to about the depth of the turf backing.
- Fill and compact a little fine aggregate so the turf sits level with the pavers.
- Cut turf into strips to fit each gap.
- Press the strips in and fix them with pins or adhesive.
- Brush the blades upright.
Linghou's seam tape helps join long strips. Linghou on Amazon · See faux grass for garden paths.
8. A photo backdrop on a frame
Difficulty: easy to moderate · Time: 2 hours
You'll need: grass wall panels, a timber or PVC pipe frame, cable ties.
- Build a freestanding frame, about 6 × 8 ft, with feet for stability.
- Fix mesh or chicken wire across the frame.
- Zip-tie grass panels to the mesh, working from the top.
- Add a neon sign, a name or balloons.
Our take: from building event backdrops with artificial grass, the panels look best when you overlap the edges slightly and fluff the blades over the joins; butted edges show as a grid in flash photos, and a frame without wide feet tips the moment a guest leans on it.
Houseables' 12-pack of 20 × 20 in panels covers a backdrop frame quickly. Houseables on Amazon · See faux grass for photo backdrops.
What can I build with artificial grass? Potty boxes, putting greens, feature walls, doormats, play mats, benches, paver strips and photo backdrops.

What tools do you need?
Seven tools cover every project here:
- Utility knife with spare blades. See our cutting guide.
- Staple gun and stainless staples. Stainless won't rust outdoors.
- Outdoor adhesive. See our adhesive guide.
- Seam tape. For joining pieces. See our seam tape guide.
- Saw. For cutting plywood and timber.
- Drill. For screws and drain holes.
- Measuring tape. Measure twice, cut once.
DIY safety
Most DIY injuries with turf come from the knife. Keep these in mind:
- Cut away from your body. And keep your free hand behind the blade.
- Change blades often. A blunt blade slips more than a sharp one.
- Ventilate when gluing. Turf adhesives can give off fumes indoors. Open windows or work outside.
- Wear gloves. Adhesive is hard to get off skin, and staples and wire are sharp.
- Keep turf away from heat. Plastic turf can melt or burn near grills, fire pits and heaters.
