Faux Grass Rolls (2026): Sizes, Widths and the 5 Best Rolls to Buy

As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.

Faux grass rolls come in a few standard widths, and picking the right one does more to reduce seams and waste than any other choice.

A faux grass roll is turf tufted into a backing and sold in a fixed width, either cut to your length or in a pre-set size. For bigger areas, you join rolls side by side with seam tape. Get the width right, and you have fewer seams to hide and less offcut to throw away. Get it wrong, and you pay for turf you cut off and spend a weekend gluing joins.

So this guide covers standard sizes, how to choose a width, how much to buy, five good rolls, and how to handle a roll once it arrives. We compared seller-listed specs and size options on Amazon and read retailer sizing guides from the US and UK.

What sizes do faux grass rolls come in?

Most rolls fall into three groups: small pre-cut packs, mid-width rolls and wide landscape rolls.

GroupTypical sizesWhere you'll find itBest for
Pre-cut packs3 × 5, 5 × 10, 6 × 10, 7 × 15 ftAmazon, big-box storesBalconies, dog patches, rugs
Mid-width consumer rolls3 to 8 ft wide, cut to lengthAmazon custom-size listingsPaths, side yards, small lawns
Landscape rolls12 or 15 ft wide, cut to lengthTurf suppliers and dealersFull lawns with few seams
UK and EU rolls1, 2, 4 and 5 m wide, sold per m²UK and EU retailersSame jobs, metric sizes

What width does artificial grass come in? In the US, consumer rolls on Amazon usually run 3 to 8 ft wide. Professional turf comes 12 or 15 ft wide. UK retailers such as B&Q mostly sell 2 m and 4 m widths, with some at 1 m and 5 m.

How long is a roll of artificial grass? It depends on how it's sold. Pre-cut packs are fixed lengths. Cut-to-length rolls can be very long. Moxie Direct, for example, lists sizes up to 8 × 65 ft and beyond on one listing. Wide landscape rolls from suppliers often run 75 to 100 ft or more before cutting.

On top of that, many Amazon listings offer hundreds of size options on one page. Goasis, Petgrow and Moxie each list several hundred width and length combinations.

So for wide rolls, see 12 ft wide faux grass and 15 ft wide faux grass. For odd shapes and exact sizes, see faux grass for custom sizes.

How do you choose the right roll size?

Cover the width with as few rolls as possible, then buy the length. Here's how:

  1. Measure the area. Measure the longest length and the widest width, including any curves or bulges. Turf is bought as a rectangle, even if your lawn isn't.
  2. Pick the width that covers the narrow side. A 12 × 20 ft lawn is covered by one 12 ft roll, cut to 20 ft, with no seams. The same lawn in 6 ft rolls needs two pieces and one long seam.
  3. Avoid thin strips. If your area is 13 ft wide, a 12 ft roll plus a 1 ft strip is worse than you'd think. Thin strips are hard to seam and show. Consider two 7 ft rolls, or trim the area slightly.
  4. Add a trim allowance. Add about 3 to 6 in on every edge for trimming. Edges are rarely perfectly straight.
  5. Keep the pile direction the same. UK retailer Primethorpe Paving points out that all pieces must face the same way. Turf laid in different directions looks like two different colours.
  6. Work out the total. Multiply width by length for each piece, then add them up. Use our cost calculator to turn that into a budget.

How do you calculate how many rolls you need? Divide the area's width by the roll width and round up. That's how many strips you need side by side. Then each strip is cut to the area's length plus trim.

The 5 best faux grass rolls

These five rolls cover the most common yard sizes.

1. Moxie Direct 8 × 65 ft — Best Value Long Roll

Pile: 0.4 in | Fiber: polypropylene | Backing: rubber with drain holes | Sizes: from 2 ft wide up to 8 × 65 ft and more

Long side yards and paths need length, not a pile of small pieces. This is the roll for that.

Moxie's 8 × 65 ft roll covers 520 sq ft in one piece. An 8 ft width covers many side yards and paths with no long seam at all, and the length means no cross joins either. The short 0.4 in polypropylene pile is easy to sweep and hose, and the rubber backing has drain holes. Moxie lists a long range of sizes on the same listing, starting from 2 ft wide.

But at 0.4 in, this is low, carpet-like turf. It won't fool anyone up close as a real lawn. For a realistic look, see #2.

Our take: from our hands-on work laying artificial grass for event stages, one long piece always looks cleaner than several joined short ones. Low polypropylene pile like this is practical for paths, but it reads as carpet in photos.

2. Goasis Lawn 1.38 in — Best Realistic Roll

Pile: 1.38 in | Colour: 4-tone with thatch | Sizes: hundreds of width and length options

If the roll is going where people will look at it every day, pile height and colour matter most.

Goasis lists a 1.38 in pile in four tones of green, with a thatch layer that copies the dead grass at the base of a real lawn. That mix of tones is what makes turf look less like one flat colour. Goasis says it's UV protected, fire resistant and weatherproof. The listing has well over a thousand size combinations, from 1 ft strips up, so you can order close to your exact width.

But taller turf needs more brushing to stay upright, especially in walked areas. And the listing calls it a dog pee mat in places, so check the size you pick is a full roll, not a mat.

Our take: in our experience, a multi-tone pile with brown thatch is what stops turf looking like one flat sheet of green. Order the exact width you need, because cutting a tall, thatched pile cleanly takes more care than short turf.

3. LITA Realistic Deluxe 0.8 in — Best All-Round Roll

Pile: 0.8 in (20 mm) | Fiber: UV-resistant PE + PP | Colour: 4-tone with thatch | Backing: rubber with drain holes

Not too tall, not too short. LITA sits in the middle, which suits most yards.

LITA's 0.8 in pile is tall enough to look like a lawn, but short enough to stay upright without much brushing. It lists UV-resistant polyethylene and polypropylene yarns, and the four tones with thatch keep it looking natural. LITA sells it in sizes by the square foot, from 1 × 1 ft upward, so you can order a 3 ft wide roll to the exact length you need.

But LITA's listed widths are narrower than landscape rolls, so a full lawn means more seams. For a wide lawn with few joins, look at 12 ft wide faux grass.

Our take: from handling a lot of turf, a pile around 0.8 in is the sweet spot for most yards: full enough to pass as lawn, short enough to spring back after foot traffic without constant brushing.

4. Petgrow 0.4 in — Best Roll for Pets

Pile: 0.4 in | Fiber: polypropylene | Backing: rubber with drain holes | Sizes: hundreds of options, from 3 × 5 ft up

Dog runs are long and narrow. A roll that comes in many lengths fits them neatly.

Petgrow's 0.4 in pile is short, so urine drains fast through the drain holes and solids are easy to pick up. Petgrow describes it as UV proof and frost proof. The listing offers hundreds of sizes, starting at 3 × 5 ft, so a fence-line dog run can be covered in one piece.

But short polypropylene can flatten and fade faster than PE in a busy, sunny run. For tougher pet turf, see our faux grass for dogs guide.

Our take: from our hands-on work with artificial grass, short polypropylene pile is easy to clean but is the first to look tired in full sun. For a shaded or part-shaded dog run, that trade-off is usually fine.

5. SHNOSU 0.4 in — Best Budget Small Roll

Pile: 0.4 in | Fiber: PP, lead free (seller-listed) | Sizes: from 1 ft wide strips up | Weight: 4.8 lb (3 × 10 ft)

Then again, sometimes you only need a small roll: a balcony, a border strip, a pet corner.

SHNOSU sells its 0.4 in turf in small sizes, including 1 ft wide strips in many lengths. That suits borders, paver edges and steps, where a wide roll is mostly waste. SHNOSU says the PP yarn is lead free, UV proof and frost proof. At 4.8 lb for 3 × 10 ft, one person can carry and lay it easily.

But it's thin, low turf with a shorter track record. Use it for small, low-traffic spots, not a main lawn.

Our take: in our experience, narrow pre-cut strips save the fiddliest cutting on borders and steps. Light, thin turf like this handles easily, but keep it to spots where nobody looks at it up close.

How do you unroll and store turf?

Unroll turf a few hours before laying it so the creases relax. These habits help:

  • Unroll it in the sun. Warmth softens the backing. A few hours in the sun lets most roll creases and folds flatten out.
  • Lay it face up and flat. Don't stack anything on it while it relaxes. Brush the blades upright once it's flat.
  • Re-roll grass side out. If you have to roll it back up, roll it with the grass facing out. This keeps the blades from being crushed flat.
  • Store it flat and dry. Keep spare rolls off the ground, in a dry shed or garage, away from sun. Damp backing can grow mould.
  • Don't fold it. A fold leaves a hard crease that takes much longer to relax than a roll curve.

How do you get creases out of a turf roll? Leave it flat in the sun for a few hours, or longer on a cool day. Stubborn creases can be pinned down at the edges. See our wrinkles guide.

Roll questions

These are the roll questions buyers ask most.

How heavy is a roll? Weight grows with width, length and pile. A small 3 × 10 ft roll of low turf can weigh under 5 lb. A dense 3 × 15 ft roll can weigh over 40 lb. Wide landscape rolls weigh hundreds of pounds and need two or more people, or a carpet pole.

Can you buy half a roll? Yes. Most Amazon listings and many dealers sell turf cut to length, so you only pay for what you need. Wide landscape rolls from suppliers are usually cut to length too. See faux grass for large areas for big jobs.
