Faux Grass Cost Calculator (2026): Work Out Turf, Supplies and Installed Cost for Your Yard

Enter your yard's size and the calculator gives a cost range for turf, supplies and installation.

A faux grass cost calculator multiplies your area by a price per square foot, then adds supplies and labour. This one also works out how many rolls to order, because turf is sold in fixed widths and that changes how much you actually buy. Every price is an editable starting point based on published cost guides, not a live price. Edit them to match your local quotes.

Default sources: turf tiers follow Bob Vila's $2 to $8 per sq ft material range and NexGen Lawns' $4 to $8 lawn range. The pro labour default of $5 to $10 per sq ft and the supplies default of $1 to $2 per sq ft are editable placeholders consistent with installed totals of roughly $10 to $20 per sq ft in our cost guide. The pet and pad add-ons are placeholders for the user to replace with local prices.

How do you use the calculator?

Measure, pick a turf tier and choose DIY or pro. Here's how:

  1. Measure length and width. Measure in feet. For odd shapes, split the yard into rectangles, work out each one and add them up.
  2. Add a waste factor. Turf comes in rectangles, so curves and corners create offcuts. Add 5% for simple shapes and up to 15% for curvy ones.
  3. Pick a roll width. Choose 7.5, 12 or 15 ft. The calculator works out how many strips you need across the width and the linear feet to order. See our roll guide.
  4. Choose a turf tier. Budget, mid-range or premium. Each has an editable price range.
  5. Set supplies. Base, weed barrier, infill, seam tape and nails, per square foot.
  6. Choose DIY or pro. DIY sets labour to zero. Pro adds a labour range.
  7. Add pets or a pad if needed. Zeolite infill for dogs, or a shock pad for play areas, add to the supplies cost.

The result is a range, low to high, not a single number. That's deliberate: real costs vary by site.

Worked example

Here is the math for a typical backyard.

SourceExampleFigure
NexGen Lawns600 sq ft at $4 per sq ft, turf onlyAbout $2,400 before installation
NexGen LawnsTypical lawn turf priceAbout $4 to $8 per sq ft, before labour
Bob VilaTurf materialAbout $2 to $8 per sq ft
Bob Vila1,000 sq ft, material levelAbout $2,000 to $8,000
FixrInstalled costAbout $5 to $12.50 per sq ft

So for a 20 × 30 ft yard (600 sq ft) with 12 ft rolls, you'd order 2 strips × 30 ft = 60 linear feet, or 720 sq ft of turf before the waste factor. That's more than 600 sq ft, because two 12 ft strips cover 24 ft of width for a 20 ft yard. The calculator includes that extra. For seam-and-waste comparisons, see 12 ft wide faux grass and 15 ft wide faux grass.

These sources don't all measure the same thing. Some quote turf only, some quote fully installed. Our faux grass cost guide explains the full breakdown.

Why do real quotes differ?

The calculator gives a range; your site sets the final number. These factors move it:

  • Site preparation. Removing an old lawn, roots or concrete adds cost.
  • Access. Narrow gates or steps mean more labour.
  • Drainage. Poor drainage may need a deeper base or a drain.
  • Region. Labour rates vary a lot by state and city.
  • Turf quality. Face weight, fibre and warranty change the price.
  • Removal and disposal. Taking away old turf or soil costs extra.
  • Irregular shapes. More cuts, seams and waste.

Our take: from our hands-on work cutting artificial grass for event stages and backdrops, offcuts are the cost people underestimate most. All strips need to run with the pile in the same direction, or the seams show as a colour change, so you can't always rotate a leftover piece to fill a gap. Budget toward the higher waste factor if your yard has curves.
