5 Best Faux Grass Rugs (2026): Indoor and Outdoor Grass Rugs for Patios, Balconies and Playrooms

As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.

A grass rug gives you a lawn in minutes: unroll it, trim if needed and it's done.

A faux grass rug is a pre-sized piece of turf with a non-slip or drainage backing, laid loose on a patio, deck, balcony or floor. No base, no digging, no glue. When you move house, it rolls up and comes with you. That makes rugs the easiest way to try turf, and the best way to add green to a space you don't own.

So this guide covers how rugs differ from rolls and mats, which backing and pile to choose, five good rugs and the right size for your space. We compared seller-listed specs on Amazon and read editorial roundups from Garden Gate and BestReviews.

Rug, roll or mat: what's the difference?

Rugs are the only turf format meant to be picked up and moved.

What's the difference between a grass rug and turf? A rug is turf cut to a set size and sold to lie loose, like any other rug. Turf for a lawn comes on a roll and gets fixed down over a compacted base. Same fibers, different job.

Are grass rugs good indoors? Yes, with the right backing. Choose a rug with a non-slip backing and a short, easy-to-vacuum pile. Put a gripper under it on smooth floors.

Need a smaller piece? See faux grass mats. For wall-to-wall indoor turf, see faux grass carpet. For lawn rolls, see faux grass rolls.

Which backing and pile should a grass rug have?

Outdoors you need drainage; indoors you need grip and a backing that won't shed. Check these:

  • Drain holes for outdoors. Rain must pass through, or it pools under the rug and rots decks. Most outdoor rugs have a perforated rubber backing. See our drainage guide.
  • Non-slip backing for indoors. Smooth floors need a rubber or TPR-style grip. A rug that slides is a trip hazard.
  • Watch for shedding backings indoors. BestReviews notes that some latex backings can shed crumbs onto indoor floors over time. Lift the rug now and then to check.
  • Low pile for easy cleaning. Short pile, around 0.4 to 0.8 in, is easy to sweep, vacuum and hose.
  • Thicker pile for softness. Taller pile, 1.38 in and up, feels soft underfoot and looks more like a lawn. But it holds more dirt and needs brushing.

Do grass rugs drain? Most outdoor ones do, through holes in the backing. Indoor-only rugs may not.

Is low or high pile better? Low pile is better for indoors and busy areas. High pile is better for looks and lounging.

The 5 best faux grass rugs

These five rugs cover patios, balconies and indoor rooms.

1. SunVilla 1.38 in — Best Faux Grass Rug Overall

Pile: 1-3/8 in | Colour: 4-tone | UV: resistant, colourfast (seller-listed) | Sizes: from 13 to 325 sq ft | Warranty: 10 years (seller-listed)

First, Garden Gate magazine picked SunVilla as its top grass rug. The specs explain why.

SunVilla lists its yarn as UV-resistant and colourfast, and backs it with a 10-year warranty claim. That matters for a rug that sits in full sun on a patio. The four tones of green and 1.38 in blades look like a real lawn. The backing has grooves and drain holes, which SunVilla says prevent waterlogging. Sizes run from small pieces up to 13 × 25 ft, so one listing covers a balcony or a whole patio.

But the linked listing opens on a small 28 × 40 in size, so pick your size carefully. And taller blades need a brush now and then to stay upright.

Our take: from our hands-on work with artificial grass, four-tone turf at this height is what reads as a real lawn in photos; single-green rugs look flat and plasticky once the sun hits them.

2. Garland Rug 5 × 8 ft — Best Grass Rug for Indoors and Playrooms

Size: 5 × 8 ft | Fiber: 100% polypropylene | Backing: marine | Weight: 9 lb

Garland grass rug in a kids' playroom with toys

Garland makes rugs first. That shows in how this one is sold.

It's a true rug in a classic 5 × 8 ft size, light at 9 lb and easy to roll up and move. The marine backing handles spills, and Garland says it dries quickly. The shorter polypropylene pile is easy to vacuum, which matters more indoors than pile height. It suits playrooms, sunrooms and screened porches.

But it can slide on smooth floors, so put a rug gripper under it. It also ships folded, with creases Garland says drop out within a few weeks.

Our take: in our experience handling turf indoors, a short, light rug is the one people actually roll up and move; heavy, tall-pile pieces end up staying put and collecting dust.

3. Goasis Lawn 1.38 in — Most Realistic Grass Rug

Pile: 1.38 in | Colour: 4-tone with thatch | Claims: UV protection, fire resistant, slip-resistant backing (seller-listed)

From a distance, every green rug looks fine. Up close, thatch makes the difference.

Goasis adds a thatch layer, the curly brown-green fibers at the base, to its 1.38 in, four-tone pile. Real lawns have dead grass at the base, so thatch makes turf look less like one flat colour. Goasis lists the rug as UV protected and fire resistant, with a slip-resistant backing. The listing offers a huge range of sizes, from 1 ft strips up.

But thatch traps more dirt than a smooth pile, so it needs a hose or shake now and then. It's better outdoors than in a busy indoor room.

Our take: from building backdrops with artificial grass, thatch is the detail that fools the eye up close; turf without it looks like a green carpet the moment someone stands next to it.

4. Petgrow Deluxe 1.38 in — Best Grass Rug for Pets and Moderate Traffic

Pile: 1.38 in | Face weight: 70 oz (seller-listed) | Backing: rubber with drain holes | Size: from 3.3 × 5 ft

Meanwhile, Bob Vila's roundup featured a Petgrow rug. The Deluxe version is the denser one.

Petgrow lists a 70 oz face weight on its Deluxe turf. Face weight is like thread count on bed sheets: more yarn per square yard means a fuller rug that resists crushing. That density helps where dogs and people walk every day. The rubber backing has drain holes for rain and urine.

But denser, taller turf takes longer to dry after rain or a rinse. For a dog's toilet spot, short pile is easier to clean. See faux grass for dogs. For rugs that suit cats and dogs, see grass rugs for pets.

Our take: in our experience with artificial grass under heavy foot traffic, density matters more than height; thin turf crushes into paths within weeks, while a dense pile springs back.

5. GL Ultrathick 1.77 in — Best Extra-Thick Grass Rug

Pile: 1.77 in | Weight: 70 oz per sq yd total (seller-listed) | Colour: 4-tone with thatch | Size: 4 × 7 ft and many more

Want a rug that feels like stepping onto a deep lawn? Pile height is the spec to look at.

At 1.77 in, it’s one of the tallest piles on Amazon. A few rugs go taller, up to about 1.97 in (50 mm), but in far fewer sizes. The listing, sold under the Goasis Lawn brand, describes a four-tone, high-density turf with a rubber backing and drain holes. It's a soft rug for lounging on a balcony or deck. And it comes in a long list of sizes, from 1 × 1 ft up.

That said, the evidence is thin: few buyers have reviewed this listing so far. Note too that the listing's 70 oz figure is total weight, not face weight, so it isn't comparable to Petgrow's 70 oz in #4. Tall pile also flattens fastest under furniture and feet.

Our take: from our hands-on décor work, very tall turf looks lush on day one but needs regular brushing to stay that way; plan to fluff it up after every gathering.

What size grass rug do you need?

Pick the rug size by the space, leaving a border of floor visible.

SpaceRug size
Doorstep or hallwayRunner, 2 × 6 or 2 × 8 ft
Small balcony3 × 5 or 4 × 6 ft
Bistro patio or reading nook5 × 8 ft
Standard patio6 × 9 or 8 × 10 ft
Large patio or playroom9 × 12 ft or bigger
Under a round tableRound rug, or cut a square to shape

To measure, take the length and width of the space, then subtract 6 to 12 in on each side for a visible border. On a balcony, keep the rug clear of the drain. Rugs with chairs on them should be big enough that chair legs stay on the rug when pushed back.

Grass rug questions

These are the rug questions buyers ask most.

How do you clean a grass rug? Outdoors, hose it down and let it dry flat. Indoors, vacuum it on a low setting. For a deep clean, take it outside, or rinse a small rug in the shower and hang it to dry. See our cleaning guide.

Does a grass rug damage wood decks? It can, if water stays trapped under it. Choose a rug with drain holes, and lift it now and then to let the boards dry, especially after rain. See faux grass for decks.
