Faux Grass Rug for Pets (2026): 5 Best Grass Rugs for Cats, Rabbits and Multi-Pet Homes

Dogs get most of the attention, but cats, rabbits and guinea pigs love a patch of grass too.
A grass rug gives an indoor cat somewhere to sprawl in the sun, and gives a rabbit or guinea pig a softer floor than tile during play time. But every pet uses grass differently. Cats lounge and knead. Rabbits dig and nibble. Guinea pigs pee wherever they stand. So the right rug depends on the animal. This guide covers each pet, the chewing rule for small animals, and five grass rugs that suit them. Got a dog? See grass rugs for dogs.

Which grass rug suits which pet?
Each animal needs something different from the grass.
| Pet | What they do on grass | What to choose |
|---|---|---|
| Cats | Lounge, knead, roll in the sun | Soft PE blend, short-to-medium pile |
| Rabbits | Hop, dig, may nibble | Short, tightly stitched, washable; supervised only |
| Guinea pigs | Walk, pee often | Washable mat, changed daily |
| Mixed pets | All of the above | Tiles you can lift and rinse one at a time |
Do cats like artificial grass? Many do, especially in a sunny spot. A soft blade with some cushion invites lounging. Stiff, short polypropylene is less inviting for sleeping on.
The chewing rule for small pets
This is the most important part of the page for rabbit and guinea pig owners.
Rabbits and guinea pigs chew. Artificial grass is plastic. A pet that swallows plastic blades can get a blocked gut, which is a vet emergency. So:
- Use grass rugs for supervised play time only. Don’t leave them in the cage or hutch unattended.
- Watch the first sessions. If your pet nibbles the blades, take the rug away and use a hay mat or fleece instead.
- Pick tightly stitched rugs. Loose blades on cut edges are the ones that get pulled out.
- Check edges weekly. Trim or replace any fraying piece.
Cats chew grass less, but some do. If your cat eats the blades, swap the rug for real cat grass.
The 5 best faux grass rugs for pets
All five come from our existing pet turf research.
1. Heyroll 3 × 5 ft — Best Grass Rug for Indoor Cats
Pile: 0.8 in (20 mm) | Fiber: PE/PP | Colour: 4-tone | Backing: rubber with drain holes (seller-listed)
Put this in the sunniest spot in your home and see what your cat does.
Heyroll blends polyethylene into its blades, and PE is the soft fiber. That’s what a lounging cat wants. The 0.8 in pile is cushioned enough to sprawl on and short enough to vacuum fur out of. At 3 × 5 ft, it’s big enough for a cat to roll fully on and small enough to carry to the shower for a rinse. Four green tones make it look like lawn, not a bath mat.
But buyers report light shedding when it’s first cut, and loose blades are the ones cats chew. Shake and rinse it well first. The drain holes also let accidents through to the floor.
Skip it if your cat sprays or has accidents. Go to #3.
Our take: from our hands-on work with artificial grass, PE-blend blades at this height feel soft under the hand, which is the feel cats look for. Single-fiber polypropylene feels stiff by comparison.

2. VANCASTLE Interlocking Tiles — Best Grass for Catios and Small Animal Pens
Size: 12 × 12 in tiles, 9 per pack (9 sq ft) | Fiber: PE | Base: self-draining click-lock (seller-listed)
Pens and catios get accidents in one spot. Tiles let you clean just that spot.
VANCASTLE’s 12 × 12 in tiles clip together with no tools, so you can floor a catio, a play pen or a balcony run in an afternoon. When one tile gets a hairball or a puddle, unclip it and rinse it in the sink. The raised base lets water run underneath, so the grass dries quickly. The blades are polyethylene, soft enough to lounge on.
But tiles show faint joins, and a few buyers report tiles that won’t stay clipped on uneven floors. One buyer saw blades come loose after pressure washing, so rinse with a hose, not a jet. Rabbits may dig at the edges, so supervise.
Skip it if you want one simple mat for a cat. Go to #1.
Our take: from building stages on hard floors, we know tile seams almost disappear once the blades are brushed across the join. Being able to lift out one dirty square is the real win for pets.

3. Pawhoo Woven Grass Mat — Best Washable Grass Rug for Rabbits and Guinea Pigs
Pile: 1.2 in | Build: 100% woven PE + PP, glue-free (seller-listed) | Care: machine wash
Guinea pigs pee constantly. A grass mat for them has to go in the wash.
Pawhoo says its mat is woven rather than glued to a rubber backing, and that it’s machine washable, safe to spin-dry and shed-proof. A woven build matters for two reasons. Glued rubber backings can smell and break down in a washer. And a shed-proof claim is exactly what you want from anything a small animal might nibble. Wash it with the pet bedding.
But the listing is new, with little buyer feedback yet. Treat the shed-proof and washable claims as the seller’s until more owners report back, and still supervise chewers.
Skip it if your pet chews everything. Use fleece or a hay mat instead.
Our take: from handling a lot of artificial grass, glued rubber backings are the first part to crack and smell. A woven, glue-free build is the right idea for anything that goes in a washer every few days.
4. XLX TURF Dog Grass Tiles, 6-Pack — Best Grass for Multi-Pet Homes
Size: 12 × 12 in tiles, 6 per pack | Pile: 1.38 in | Fiber: lead-free PE (seller-listed) | Blades: 4-tone, C-shape
A home with a dog, a cat and a rabbit needs grass that suits all of them.
XLX sells these as dog tiles, but the features help any pet. The seller lists the blades as lead-free, UV-resistant polyethylene, a reassuring claim when several animals share it. Tiles clip into any shape, so you can build a zone along a wall or around a cat tree. Drainage holes stop puddles, and a soiled tile unclips for rinsing.
But the 1.38 in pile holds more fur and mess than a short pile, so vacuum and rinse often. Tiles also need a flat floor to stay connected.
Skip it for a single cat’s sunny spot. Go to #1.
Our take: from working with artificial grass tiles, a four-tone blade at this height hides the joints well once clipped together. Brush the blades over the seams after laying and they mostly disappear.

5. Moxie Direct — Best Grass for Cat Shelves and Furniture
Pile: 0.4 in | Fiber: polypropylene | Backing: non-slip rubber with drain holes | Size: cut to fit (seller-listed)
Cat shelves, tree platforms and window perches are all odd shapes. This turf cuts to any of them.
Moxie says its turf cuts to any size or shape without fraying, which means fewer loose blades for a cat to pick at. Cut a strip for a wall shelf, a circle for a tree platform, a rectangle for a window perch. The non-slip rubber back stops pieces sliding when a cat jumps on. The short 0.4 in pile is the easiest of all to vacuum fur from.
But it’s polypropylene, the stiffest turf fiber. Many cats prefer softer PE for sleeping on. Use it where cats walk and jump, not where they nap.
Skip it if your cat is a dedicated lounger. Go to #1.
Our take: in our experience, short polypropylene turf cuts cleanly and is quick to fit to odd shapes. But it feels stiffer than PE, so we’d use it where cats walk rather than where they sleep.

How to keep a pet grass rug clean
Pet rugs need more cleaning than décor rugs.
- Vacuum fur weekly. Use a low setting with the beater bar off.
- Rinse accidents the same day. Urine left overnight soaks into the backing and smells.
- Use an enzyme cleaner for smells. Enzymes break down urine residue that water leaves behind. See our faux grass cleaner guide.
- Wash small-pet mats every few days. Guinea pig and rabbit mats get the most mess.

Pet grass rug questions
These are the questions pet owners ask most.
Can rabbits live on artificial grass? Not full time. Use it for supervised play only, because rabbits chew and plastic is a blockage risk.
Is artificial grass safe for guinea pigs? For short, supervised sessions on a washable mat, yes. Remove it if they nibble the blades.
Can cats use a grass rug as a litter box? Some will. That’s hard on a rug. Keep a litter box nearby, and use a tray system if your cat insists on grass.
Does fur stick to grass rugs? Yes, more than to smooth floors. A rubber-bristle rake lifts it. See our brush guide.
