5 Softest Faux Grass Picks (2026): Turf That Feels Good Barefoot, and How to Make Any Lawn Softer

As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.

Soft faux grass comes down to fibre, pile height and blade shape, plus a pad if you want more cushion.

Soft faux grass uses polyethylene fibres, a medium to tall pile and blade shapes that bend rather than scratch. It's the turf you want if kids play barefoot, you lie on the lawn in summer or you just like the feel of grass underfoot. Cheap, stiff polypropylene turf can feel like a scrubbing brush. Soft turf feels closer to a well-kept lawn.

This guide explains what makes turf soft, five of the softest lines and how to soften any lawn. We drew on product details from RealTurf, UK retailers MKM and ExpressGrass, and seller-listed specs on Amazon. Softness claims are the sellers' own, and softness is personal, so feel a sample before you buy.

What makes faux grass soft?

Four factors decide how turf feels underfoot:

  • Fibre. Polyethylene (PE) is the softest common turf fibre. Polypropylene (PP) is stiffer, and nylon is the firmest. See our fibre guide.
  • Pile height. A medium to tall pile, around 35 to 50 mm, gives more give than short turf. RealTurf's soft lines sit at 35 and 50 mm. See our pile height guide.
  • Blade shape. Rounded shapes, like D or oval profiles, bend smoothly and feel gentle. RealTurf highlights D-shaped fibres on its soft turf. Sharp-edged, flat blades feel scratchier. See our blade guide.
  • Density. Higher density gives a more even, cushioned feel, with no thin patches.

But there's a trade-off. The softest turf is often rated for lower traffic. MKM describes one of its softest lines as suited to low to medium use. Soft fibres flatten faster under heavy feet.

What is the softest type of artificial grass? Usually a polyethylene turf with a 35 to 50 mm pile, rounded blades and high density.

The 5 softest faux grass picks

These five are among the softest lines sold.

1. SunVilla 1.38 in — Best Soft Turf Overall

Pile: 1-3/8 in | Colour: 4-tone | Claims: soft surface, non-toxic, lead-free (seller-listed)

SunVilla pitches its turf as soft and safe for pets and kids to play on. Its 1.38 in pile sits at the low end of the soft range, which keeps it comfortable without flattening too easily. SunVilla lists non-toxic, lead-free yarn, and buyers consistently describe it as comfortable underfoot.

But it isn't the tallest or plushest turf here. For a deeper feel, see #4.

Our take: from our hands-on work with artificial grass, a PE pile around this height is the sweet spot for barefoot comfort; it feels soft but springs back instead of matting down after a weekend of play.

2. Goasis Lawn 1.38 in — Best Soft Turf With a Natural Look

Pile: 1.38 in | Colour: 4-tone with thatch

Soft and realistic usually go together, because both come from more yarn and more variety.

Goasis describes its turf as soft and lush, with a thatch layer that copies the dead grass at the base of a real lawn. The thatch also adds a springy cushion under the main blades.

But thatch holds dirt, so it needs a rinse and brush now and then to stay soft.

Our take: in our experience with turf on event floors, a brown thatch layer is what stops grass looking like a green carpet in photos, and it adds a little bounce you notice the moment you step on it.

3. ZGR HOME&GARDEN 1.38 in, 75 oz — Best Dense Soft Turf

Pile: 1.38 in | Weight: 75 oz total per sq yd (seller-listed) | Fiber: PE/PP/PA | Size: 3 × 8 ft

Density makes turf feel even. ZGR packs a lot of yarn in.

ZGR lists 75 oz total weight per square yard at a 1.38 in pile, and describes the turf as soft, lush and thicker than others. Higher density means no thin, scratchy patches.

But its blend includes PP and nylon, which are firmer than pure PE. And 75 oz is total weight, not face weight, so it isn't directly comparable to face-weight figures.

Our take: we've handled enough mixed-fibre turf to know a little nylon makes a pile stand back up better, but you do feel it as a firmer, crisper texture than an all-PE roll.

4. COOLGRASS 1.97 in — Plushest Turf for Lounging

Pile: 1.97 in (50 mm) | Size: 3 × 5 ft | Weight: 8.6 lb

For pure plushness, pile height wins. This is the tallest turf we found on Amazon.

At 50 mm, COOLGRASS sits right at the top of the soft range. It's deep and cushioned underfoot, ideal for a lounging corner, a reading spot or a kids' play mat. COOLGRASS says it's UV and wear resistant.

But it's a newer listing with little buyer feedback so far, and very tall turf flattens fastest under feet and furniture. It's sold mainly in small sizes.

Our take: from our hands-on work with long-pile grass on stages, 50 mm turf looks lush and feels wonderful, but it shows every footpath and chair leg until you brush it back up.

5. SYNLawn EnviroLoc+ and MegaGrass MegaPlush — Softest Dealer Options

Sold by: dealers and installers (non-affiliate) | SYNLawn EnviroLoc+: about 1.75 in pile | MegaGrass MegaPlush: a plush landscape line

Professionally installed plush turf lawn

The softest turf often comes from dealer lines, where premium yarns and shapes are standard.

Affiliate site Journeyman lists SYNLawn's EnviroLoc+ and MegaGrass's MegaPlush among the softest turf options. SYNLawn's line has a tall pile of about 1.75 in. Both are sold through dealers, so you can feel full-size samples before you commit.

Our take: in our experience, nothing beats running a hand over a full-size sample; dealer turf in this tier tends to have the most varied blade colours, which is what makes it read as real grass up close.

But they cost more and are quote-based. See our SYNLawn review and premium faux grass.

How do you make faux grass softer?

A thin foam pad makes any turf noticeably softer. Here's what helps:

  • Add a foam shock pad. ExpressGrass sells a 7 mm shock pad that it says gives a softer feel. Thicker pads add more cushion. See our padding guide and shock pad guide.
  • Brush the blades upright. Flattened blades feel harder. Regular brushing restores the bounce. See our brush guide.
  • Use less sand, or a rounded infill. Heavy, sharp sand makes turf firmer. A lighter layer, or rounded coated infill, feels softer. See our infill guide.
  • Avoid PP-heavy blends. If softness is the priority, choose turf where PE is the main fibre.
