5 Best Faux Grass Picks for Indoor Use (2026): Grass Carpets and Rugs for Rooms, Offices and Gyms

As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.

Indoors, faux grass works more like carpet than lawn, so the backing and the cleaning matter most.

Outdoors, turf has a whole world to drain into. Indoors, it sits on your hardwood, tile or carpet. Spill a juice box on outdoor turf and it disappears into the gravel. Spill it on indoor turf with drain holes, and it lands on your floor. So indoor turf is judged on different things: how well it protects the floor, how easy it is to vacuum, and whether it smells of plastic for a week.

These picks cover the rooms where faux grass gets used most. We compared seller-listed specs on Amazon and read the patterns in buyer reviews.

What does indoor faux grass need?

Indoor turf skips drainage and needs a backing that protects the floor. Check for these:

  • A solid or sealed backing, or protection under it. Most turf has drain holes for outdoor use. Indoors, those holes let spills and pet accidents through to your floor. Choose a solid backing, or put a waterproof floor protector underneath.
  • A short-to-medium pile. Short pile vacuums like carpet. Tall lawn pile traps crumbs, hair and dust.
  • Low odour. New turf can smell strongly of plastic. Air it outdoors for a few days before bringing it in, especially in bedrooms and playrooms.
  • A non-slip backing. Rugs that slide on hardwood or tile are a fall risk. Look for rubber or latex backing, or add a rug gripper.
  • Fire rating for commercial spaces. Offices, stores and event venues often need fire-rated floor coverings. Check local codes and ask the seller for a fire rating.
  • Lead-free and non-toxic claims. Indoors, kids and pets are in close contact all day. See non-toxic faux grass.

Can you use outdoor turf indoors? Yes, most "indoor/outdoor" turf works inside. Just protect the floor from the drain holes, and give it time to air out.

The 5 best indoor faux grass picks

These five picks cover the rooms where faux grass is most often used.

1. Garland Rug 9 × 12 ft — Best Indoor Faux Grass for a Kids' Playroom

Size: 9 × 12 ft | Fiber: 100% polypropylene | Backing: marine | Weight: 16 lb

Garland grass rug covering a playroom floor with a play tent and toys

Want to turn a playroom into a "lawn" for indoor picnics and toy farms? You need a room-size rug.

Garland's 9 × 12 ft rug covers 108 sq ft, enough for most playrooms wall to wall, or close to it. At 16 lb, it's light enough to roll up and shake out in the yard. Garland leaves the edges unbound, which looks more natural than a stitched rug border. The marine backing is built for wet conditions, so a spilled drink doesn't soak straight through.

But it ships folded, and Garland warns about creases. It says to roll it against the folds and that creases drop out within a few weeks. A crease is a small trip hazard for toddlers until then. It's also polypropylene, so it feels firmer than a PE turf for crawling babies.

Skip it if you only need a small play corner. Go to #5.

Our take: from our hands-on work with artificial grass, folded turf always needs patience. Rolled against the folds and left in a warm room, creases do relax, so plan the rug a week before the party.

2. FORZA Sprint and Sled Track — Best Indoor Turf for a Home Gym

Size: 32.8 × 3.3 ft | Fiber: 100% polyethylene | Backing: latex, non-slip | UV stability: 6,000 hours (seller-listed)

That's because turf in a home gym is for sleds, sprints and lunges. That's a job for gym turf, not lawn turf.

FORZA's track is a long 32.8 × 3.3 ft strip of 100% polyethylene on a latex backing. FORZA says the backing grips the floor so the track stays in place during sled and prowler work. Gym turf is dense and low, so a sled glides over it instead of digging in. It suits a garage gym or a long basement wall.

But the big caution is evidence. The listing had no buyer feedback yet when we checked. FORZA also says it's for smooth, flat surfaces, so it belongs on a concrete or rubber gym floor, not over thick carpet.

Skip it if you just want a stretching area. A rug like #1 is softer.

Our take: in our experience handling turf, a dense PE strip on a latex backing stays put far better on a smooth floor than loose lawn offcuts. For sled work, that grip is the whole point.

3. LITA 0.4 in — Best Indoor Faux Grass Carpet for Offices and Stores

Pile: 0.4 in | Fiber: polypropylene | Backing: rubber with drain holes | Size: 3 × 10 ft and custom

In an office or retail space, turf has to look sharp and clean easily under hundreds of footsteps.

LITA's 0.4 in pile is short and flat, so it vacuums like commercial carpet. Office chairs roll over it, and dropped staples or crumbs sit on top instead of disappearing into the blades.

Short pile also suits retail displays and feature strips, where turf frames a product or marks a walkway.

But check two things before you lay it in a business. First, ask LITA for a fire rating, because commercial floor coverings often need one, and the listing doesn't state it. Second, the backing has drain holes, so put a protective underlay down on wood floors. Polypropylene is also the firmest turf fiber, which is fine underfoot in shoes.

Skip it if you need a soft surface to sit on. Go to #1.

Our take: from our hands-on décor work, short flat pile is the turf that still looks tidy after a busy day of footfall. Longer pile indoors shows every crumb and traffic lane.

4. KASZOO Grass Wall Panels, 12-Pack — Best for Indoor Event and Photo Backdrops

Size: 12 panels, 20 × 20 in each (about 33 sq ft) | Style: boxwood-look | Includes: interlocking connectors, 50 zip ties

Not all indoor grass goes on the floor. For parties, weddings and photo corners, it goes on the wall.

KASZOO's 12-pack covers about 33 sq ft with 20 × 20 in panels that clip together with interlocking connectors. Zip ties are included, so you can fix the panels to a frame or a mesh. You can cut and shape them to fit an arch or a backdrop frame.

This is boxwood-style greenery rather than lawn grass, which reads as lush and full on a wall. For a flat grass look, our wall panels guide compares styles.

The limit is that panels aren't for walking on. They're decor only. And panels sold for both indoor and outdoor use can fade faster in direct sun through a window.

Skip it if you want grass underfoot. Go to #1.

Our take: we build event backdrops from panels like these, and boxwood-style greenery photographs fuller than flat grass. Hide the seams by staggering panels, and keep them out of a sunny window if you want the green to last.

5. Petgrow 0.4 in — Best Budget Indoor Grass Mat

Pile: 0.4 in | Fiber: polypropylene | Backing: rubber with drain holes | Size: 3 × 10 ft and custom

Want a strip of green inside the back door, or a small mat for a reading corner? Keep it simple.

The 0.4 in pile vacuums easily and lies flat, so doors open over it. You can trim it to fit a hallway or an alcove.

On top of that, Bob Vila named a Petgrow rug its best overall artificial grass.

But it has drain holes. Indoors, that means spills go through to the floor, so put a waterproof mat or protector under it, especially on hardwood. Polypropylene is also the stiffest fiber, so it's better for walking on than lounging on.

Skip it if you need a playroom-size rug. Go to #1.

Our take: in our experience with artificial grass indoors, a low 0.4 in pile is the easiest to live with: it vacuums fast and doors clear it. Just never skip the floor protector under drain holes.

How do you lay faux grass on indoor floors?

The floor underneath decides whether you need a pad or glue.

  1. Over carpet: lay the turf straight on top. No pad is needed. Turf can shift on deep pile, so tape the edges with carpet tape if it moves.
  2. Over hardwood or tile: put a thin pad or a rug gripper underneath. It stops sliding and adds a layer between turf and floor. See our padding guide.
  3. Protect against moisture. If your turf has drain holes, add a waterproof floor protector under it. Trapped spills can stain wood and dull tile grout.
  4. Glue only for permanent installs. For a retail floor or gym you won't change, use a carpet adhesive. Glue is hard to remove and can damage floors. See our adhesive guide.
  5. Trim from the back. Cut the backing with a sharp knife for clean edges along walls and doors.
  6. Lift and check now and then. Every few months, roll back loose rugs and check the floor underneath is dry.

How do you clean indoor faux grass?

Indoor turf cleans like a short-pile carpet:

  • Vacuum weekly. Turn off the beater bar or use a low setting, so it doesn't pull fibers. See our faux grass vacuum guide.
  • Spot-clean spills fast. Blot liquids, then wipe with warm water and a little mild detergent.
  • Deep-clean loose rugs outside. Take smaller rugs outdoors to hose and dry in the sun.
  • Brush the pile now and then. A stiff brush lifts flattened blades in busy walkways.

Those four habits cover most rooms. More tips are in our faux grass cleaning guide.

Indoor faux grass questions

These are the questions people ask before bringing turf inside.

Does indoor turf smell? New turf often has a plastic smell at first. Most buyers say it fades within days. Air it outdoors or in a garage before bringing it in.

How long does it last indoors? Usually longer than outdoors, because there's no UV or weather. LazyLawn, a UK brand, suggests indoor turf can last around 15 years. Heavy-traffic areas wear faster, so expect walkways to flatten first.

Is it good for pets indoors? For lounging, yes. For a toilet spot, use a purpose-built pad with a tray, so urine doesn't reach your floor. See our dog potty areas guide.
