Faux Grass Reviews (2026): What Owners Love, What They Regret and Our Brand Review Index
Most owners are happy with faux grass, and the ones who aren't usually point to the same few problems.
Faux grass reviews are owner and editorial assessments of how turf performs over the years: how it looks, how hot it gets, how it handles pets, how it drains and how much upkeep it really needs. Read enough of them and a pattern appears. The happy owners talk about time saved and a green lawn all year. The unhappy ones talk about heat, smell and installs that went wrong. Almost none of the complaints are a mystery. Most come down to choosing the wrong turf or building a poor base.
The owner patterns below draw on verified-buyer reviews and editorial sources.

What do owners like about faux grass?
Owners mention five benefits again and again:
- No mowing or watering. This is the top reason people buy turf, and the one owners praise most often.
- Green all year. No brown patches in drought, no mud in winter. The lawn looks the same in August as in April.
- Mud-free with dogs. Dog owners love that paws come in clean and dogs can't dig holes. See faux grass for dogs.
- Water savings. Owners in dry states often mention lower water bills. These are personal anecdotes, and savings depend heavily on local water rates and what the old lawn needed.
- A play surface for kids. Parents like a soft, even, clean place for children to play. See faux grass for kids.
Is artificial grass worth it, according to owners? For most owners who chose the right turf and a good installer, yes. The regret stories usually involve cheap turf, a poor base or a rule they didn't check.
What are the most common complaints?
Six complaints cover nearly every negative review, and most trace back to installation or spec choice.
| Complaint | Usual cause | The fix |
|---|---|---|
| It gets very hot in summer | Dark, dense turf in full sun; black infill | Light-coloured turf, cooling infill, shade and a quick spray. See faux grass for hot climates |
| It smells of dog urine | Residue in infill and base; poor drainage | Enzyme cleaner, zeolite infill, a draining base. See our deodorizer guide |
| Weeds and hollow edges after a couple of years | A thin or poorly compacted base, no edging, no weed barrier | Fix edges and base, pull weeds early. See our repair guide |
| Seams are visible | Factory edges not trimmed, mixed grain direction | Re-seam properly. See our seam tape guide |
| It faded quickly | Cheap turf with weak UV protection | Choose UV-stable turf with a fade warranty. See faux grass for durability |
| It cost more than expected | Underestimating labor and base work | Get itemised quotes. See our faux grass cost guide |
One widely shared UK case, from a TV presenter, described weeds and hollow edges appearing about two years after install. That's a classic sign of a base or edging problem rather than the turf itself.
Our take: from our hands-on work with artificial grass, fading is the complaint we'd weigh most when choosing turf. Rolls without solid UV treatment visibly lose colour in a single sunny season, while most of the other problems here are settled at install.
What are the problems with artificial grass? Heat, pet odour, poor installs, visible seams, fading and cost. Most can be avoided with the right turf and a good base.
Why do people regret artificial grass? Usually because of a rushed install, cheap turf or a local rule they didn't know about.
City bylaws and HOA surprises
Some owners' biggest regret wasn't the turf but a rule they didn't check.
Cities and homeowners' associations can limit or ban turf. In Toronto, news outlets including CBC and CTV have reported on homeowners caught out by a bylaw requiring 75% of the front yard to be soft landscaping, and turf not counting toward it. In California, ABC7 reported a Glendale homeowner being ordered to remove turf. And local news outlets in Nevada, Florida and Connecticut have covered HOA disputes over turf.
Some states have moved the other way and limited HOA bans. California's Civil Code, for example, bars HOAs from prohibiting artificial turf as part of its water-saving rules. Laws differ by state and change over time, so check your own state and HOA rules before you buy.
Can a city or HOA make you remove artificial grass? Yes, in some places. Check your city's landscaping rules and your HOA's covenants first, especially for front yards. See faux grass for front yards.

Review questions
These are the review questions buyers ask most.
Can you trust Amazon reviews for turf? Partly. Most reviews are written in the first weeks, when any turf looks good. Look for reviews with photos taken after 12 months or more, and for complaints that repeat across many reviews. Be wary of lots of short, similar five-star reviews.
How long until problems show? Install problems, like dips, lifting seams and weeds at the edges, usually show within the first one to three years. Fading and wear take longer, depending on sun and use. That's why long-term owner reviews are worth more than first impressions.
