5 Best Faux Grass Mats (2026): Door Mats, Pet Mats and Small Utility Mats
As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.
Grass mats are the small workhorses of faux turf: they catch dirt at the door, give pets a potty spot and brighten a step.
A faux grass mat is a small, backed piece of turf, usually under 3 × 5 ft, used as a door mat, a pet mat or a utility surface. It isn't trying to be a lawn. It's trying to do one job well: trap mud, drain urine, survive a washing machine or take a golf swing. Each of those jobs needs a slightly different build.
So this guide is sorted by job. We compared seller-listed specs on Amazon and read buyer review patterns.

What are grass mats used for?
Grass mats do four jobs, and each needs a slightly different build. Here they are:
- Door mats. Stiff, upright blades act like a brush, scraping mud and grit off shoes. A rubber or TPR backing stops slipping and doesn't rot when wet. Plastic grass also dries fast, so it resists mould better than a coir mat.
- Pet and potty mats. These need drainage, either holes in the backing or a tray underneath. Some are machine washable, which makes indoor potty training much easier.
- Patio and balcony accents. A small piece of turf by a step, under a chair or on a balcony. These need UV-stable fibers, ideally polyethylene, so they don't fade.
- Golf and putting mats. A dense, short surface for hitting balls or putting. These need a thick backing to absorb club strikes. For more, see faux grass for golf.
Do grass door mats work? Yes, for loose dirt, mud and grass clippings. The blades scrape shoes like a brush. They're less good at drying wet shoes than an absorbent fabric mat.
Can you use a grass mat for a dog? Yes. Choose one with drain holes or a tray, and wash it often. See faux grass for dogs.
The 5 best faux grass mats
These five mats cover the door, the dog and the patio.
1. OLanto Grass Door Mat 17 × 30 in — Best Grass Door Mat
Size: 17 × 30 in | Backing: TPR non-slip layer | Weight: 16 oz

A door mat lives or dies by two things: whether it grips the floor and whether it scrapes shoes clean.
OLanto adds a TPR layer under the grass, which it says increases friction with the ground and keeps the mat in place. That's the key safety feature on a wet step. The grass blades scrape dirt off shoes, and the seller says you just rinse it and dry it in the sun when it gets dirty. At 17 × 30 in, it fits a standard front door.
But at 16 oz, it's light, so it can be kicked out of place on a busy step.

2. CooZero 47.3 × 31.5 in — Best Pet Potty Mat
Size: 47.3 × 31.5 in | Thickness: 1.18 in | Backing: drain holes | Suits: cats, small and medium dogs (seller)
Next, apartment dogs need a toilet spot that isn't the carpet. This is one of the most popular mats for that job.
CooZero's mat is nearly 4 × 3 ft, big enough for a small or medium dog to turn around on. The seller lists it as suiting cats and small to medium dogs, and says it can be cut to any size. Drain holes let urine pass through, so the surface stays drier between rinses. It also includes thatch for a more natural look and feel under paws.
But without a tray, urine drains onto whatever is underneath. Indoors or on a balcony, put it in a tray or on a waterproof surface, and rinse it daily.
Our take: in our experience cutting artificial grass to shape, a mat you can trim yourself is worth having; a sharp knife from the back gives a clean edge that fits a tray or corner exactly.

3. Pawhoo Woven Grass Mat — Best Machine-Washable Grass Mat
Pile: 1.2 in | Build: 100% woven PE + PP, glue-free (seller) | Care: machine wash

Hosing a pee mat on a balcony every day gets old fast. A washer-safe mat fixes that.
Pawhoo says its mat is woven rather than glued to a rubber backing. That matters because glued rubber backings can smell over time and break down in a washing machine. Pawhoo says this one is machine washable, safe to spin-dry and shed-proof. It also lists a very fast drainage rate, so liquid passes straight through.
That makes it a good fit for indoor potty training, where you want to throw the mat in the wash with the towels.
But this listing is new, with little buyer feedback so far. Treat the drainage and durability claims as the seller's until more buyers report back.
Our take: from handling a lot of artificial grass, glued rubber backings are the first part to crack and smell; a woven, glue-free build is the right idea for anything that goes in a washer.
4. Heyroll 3 × 5 ft — Best Patio and Step Accent Mat
Pile: 0.8 in (20 mm) | Fiber: PE/PP | Colour: 4-tone | Backing: rubber with drain holes | Weight: 2.02 kg
A small patch of green by a bench or a back step changes how a patio feels.
Heyroll's 3 × 5 ft mat is sized for exactly that: under a bistro set, at the foot of steps or on a small balcony. The 0.8 in, four-tone PE/PP pile looks natural and stays upright better than taller turf. Heyroll says it handles sun and frost, and the rubber backing has drain holes plus a ridged underside that it says filters water faster.
But for a full patio, a single 3 × 5 ft mat looks lost. Go up to a rug, like those in our faux grass rug guide.
Our take: from our hands-on décor work, a four-tone PE/PP blend is what looks natural in daylight and in photos; single-tone mats read as obviously plastic next to real plants.

5. SAPLIZE Foldable Golf Hitting Mat — Best Golf Practice Mat
Size: 23 × 16 in | Surface: dual turf, fairway and rough (seller) | Base: 10 mm EVA foam | Weight: 735 g
Hitting off a garage floor hurts your wrists and your clubs. A cushioned mat stops that.
SAPLIZE builds its mat on a 10 mm EVA foam base, which it says absorbs impact and protects your clubs and wrists. The two turf surfaces copy a fairway and the rough, so you can practise chipping off both. It folds flat for storage and weighs under 1 kg, so it goes in a car boot easily.
But at 23 × 16 in, it's for chipping and short swings, not full driving practice. For a full home setup, see faux grass for golf and putting greens.
Our take: in our experience with artificial grass, a thick foam base under the turf is what stops it creasing and curling at the edges; thin mats with no padding wrinkle quickly under repeated impact.
How do you clean a grass mat?
Most grass mats clean with a shake and a hose. Here's the routine:
- Shake it out. Take it outside and shake or beat it to drop loose dirt.
- Hose it down. Rinse from the back and the front to push dirt out of the blades.
- Scrub if needed. Use warm soapy water and a stiff brush on stubborn dirt.
- Use enzyme on pet mats. Plain water doesn't remove urine smell. An enzyme cleaner does. See our deodorizer guide.
- Air dry it. Hang it or lay it flat in the sun. Don't tumble dry rubber-backed mats.
Can you wash a grass mat? Only if the label says so. Woven, glue-free mats like #3 are made for the washing machine. Rubber-backed mats should be hosed instead. See our cleaning guide.
Grass mat questions
These are the mat questions buyers ask most.
Do grass mats slip? They can, on smooth or wet floors. Choose one with a rubber or TPR backing, like #1, and add a rug gripper indoors if it still moves.
Do grass mats fade outdoors? Yes, eventually, especially in full sun. Polyethylene with a UV rating fades slowest. See UV-resistant faux grass.
